Study Medicine in Azerbaijan: The Complete Guide for International Students (2026–2027)

Medicine is one of the most searched subjects among prospective students in Azerbaijan, and also one of the most misunderstood. Many websites quote tuition figures that are ten years old, claim recognitions nobody has checked, or imply that any medical degree from the country will open doors at home automatically. That is not how it works.

This guide is built mainly on the official websites of the universities themselves and on government sources. It tells you which universities actually accept international medical students, what the official fees and durations are, what the English track really requires, how admission works step by step, what we could and could not confirm about housing, and, most importantly, how to think about whether your degree will be accepted when you go home.

Albatoul Group is an international student recruitment and enrollment consulting agency. We help students choose a university, prepare documents, and complete registration. Because a medical degree is a six-year, five-figure commitment, always confirm fees, language of instruction, and recognition in writing before you pay anything.

Why Students Choose Medicine in Azerbaijan

1. Lower tuition than many alternatives. Official tuition of USD 6,000 per year at AMU, and under USD 3,000 at NSU, is well below what private medical schools charge in many other countries.

2. A medical degree taught in English. AMU’s English track means you do not have to start from zero in Azerbaijani to study the core curriculum.

3. A dedicated medical university. AMU is the country’s main medical university, with its own teaching clinics (a therapeutic clinic, a surgical clinic, a dental clinic, and an oncology clinic are listed on its official site).

4. Location and lifestyle. Baku is a modern capital with metro, buses, and taxis, in a secular country with a Muslim-majority population where halal food and prayer facilities are easy to find.

5. A manageable visa and residence process. The university submits residence permit applications on behalf of students.

The honest trade-offs

  • The total cost is not just tuition. The preparatory course adds a fifth of a year’s tuition up front, and housing, insurance, and living costs are extra.
  • Recognition at home is your responsibility. No Azerbaijani university can guarantee that your home country will recognize your degree (see the dedicated section below).
  • Clinical language. Patients in hospitals mostly speak Azerbaijani or Russian. Ask the university how clinical rotations work for English-track students.
  • You cannot change track after the interview. AMU states that once you are accepted through the interview, you cannot switch specialty or language; you would have to re-register in the next preparatory period and your result would be cancelled.

Which Universities Offer Medicine?

1. Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU), Baku

AMU, founded in 1930, is the country’s main medical university. It has six faculties: two General Medicine (“Medical-Preventive”) faculties, Public Health, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Military Medicine. For international students, AMU’s official admissions page lists these study fields and languages:

FieldLanguage of instruction
General MedicineAzerbaijani, English, Russian
DentistryAzerbaijani, English, Russian
PharmacyAzerbaijani, English, Russian
Public HealthAzerbaijani, Russian
PhysiotherapyAzerbaijani, English
NursingAzerbaijani

AMU is the university we most often recommend to students whose priority is a dedicated medical institution with its own clinics and a clear English track. See our full Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU): Full Profile.

2. Nakhchivan State University (NSU)

NSU, a state university founded in 1967 in Nakhchivan, offers Medicine in Azerbaijani and English at USD 2,941.18 per year according to its official fee schedule for international students. Its Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Public Health programs are Azerbaijani-only. Note that NSU is a different institution from the private “Nakhchivan University”, so check the exact name on your offer letter. NSU is located in Nakhchivan, an exclave separated from the main part of Azerbaijan, so consider the practicalities of travel and the clinical environment. See our Nakhchivan State University (NSU): Full Profile.

Universities that do not currently offer Medicine to international students

Khazar University does not list Medicine in its current official fee schedule for international students, and Baku State University, ADA University, and ASOIU do not offer medical degrees. If any agent tells you otherwise, ask for the program in the university’s official schedule.

Residency and Other Health-Related Programs

Medical residency at Nakhchivan State University

After the medical degree, Nakhchivan State University’s fee schedule lists a Residency level in 16 specialties, taught in Azerbaijani at USD 3,529.41 per year:

Anesthesiology and Resuscitation · General Surgery · Cardiovascular Surgery · Otorhinolaryngology · Urology · Ophthalmology · Obstetrics and Gynecology · Therapy · Infectious Diseases · Physiotherapy · Pathological Anatomy · Pediatrics · Stomatology · Organization of Social Hygiene and Health Care · Laboratory Work · Epidemiology

The schedule does not state the length of each specialty or the entry requirements, so ask for both in writing. Because the language of instruction is Azerbaijani, residency suits students who have become fluent during their degree.

Related health programs (not substitutes for a medical degree)

These are different professions, and your home country may or may not accept them under its own rules. They can suit students with a smaller budget or a different language need.

Two notes: Physiotherapy is also offered at AMU in Azerbaijani and English according to its official page, while ASA’s program is Azerbaijani and Russian only. These figures come from the universities’ official fee schedules, so confirm them before you pay.

Duration and Degree Structure

Per AMU’s official FAQ, after the preparatory course (5 months):

FacultyDuration
General Medicine (Medical-Preventive)6 years
Dentistry5 years
Pharmacy4 years

The preparatory course is a language and foundation stage that all international applicants complete before the main program starts. AMU’s official FAQ states its annual fee is USD 5,000 for this course.

Graduates who want a specialty can continue to postgraduate study (master’s and residency) at AMU, and Nakhchivan State University also lists a residency level in 16 specialties (see “Residency and Other Health-Related Programs” below). Residency lengths and entry rules differ by specialty, so ask the university directly. Note also that residency or licensing back home is governed by your home country, not by Azerbaijan.

What a six-year medical degree can cost

These are illustrations from the official numbers, not quotes:

  • AMU: USD 5,000 (preparatory course) + 6 × USD 6,000 (tuition) = USD 41,000 in tuition. Add about USD 3,600 if you take a dormitory place for six years (6 × USD 600), giving roughly USD 44,600 before living costs, insurance, visa and residence fees, and travel.
  • NSU: 6 × USD 2,941.18 = about USD 17,647 in tuition, if the program is six years long (confirm the exact length and whether a preparatory course applies). We have not been able to confirm NSU’s housing fees from an official source.

Important cautions:

  • Fees change. In 2026, AMU announced reductions of AZN 1,000–1,500 per year, depending on specialty, for students studying on a paid basis in 2026–2027. We could not confirm whether this applies to international students, so ask AMU in writing for the current international fee.
  • Many third-party websites quote figures from AZN-era or older fee tables (for example USD 3,500 from years ago, or ranges such as USD 3,500–7,500). Use only the university’s current written confirmation.
  • Our guide Cost of Studying and Living in Azerbaijan 2026 gives a realistic monthly living budget.

The Language Question

AMU English track. English-track applicants must submit IELTS 6.5 or above, or TOEFL 80 or above, according to AMU’s official document list.

Entrance interview. AMU’s FAQ explains that applicants register online, are invited to an online interview, and the interview and exam are held in the language they choose (Azerbaijani, English, or Russian). Successful applicants are notified within 24 hours.

Clinical reality. Whatever language you study in, clinical rotations bring you into contact with patients and staff who mostly speak Azerbaijani or Russian. Ask the university in writing how English-track students are placed in clinical teaching and what language support is provided.

Documents required (AMU official list)

  • Scanned foreign passport
  • Secondary school certificate, approved by the competent authority in your country (usually the Ministry of Education) and officially translated into Azerbaijani; if that is not possible where you are, translated into English or Russian and uploaded electronically
  • Medical certificate showing you do not have HIV or Hepatitis B and C
  • Valid entry/border-crossing document
  • Six 3×4 cm photographs taken in the last six months
  • English certificate (IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 80+) for English-track applicants

AMU also notes that a “health certificate” obtained in your home country is not valid for the residence permit; you will need a local health certificate in Azerbaijan for that. Our guide Admission Requirements and Required Documents to Study in Azerbaijan 2026 explains how to authenticate your school certificate with an apostille or consular legalization.

Visa and Residence

After arriving on a student visa, students obtain a temporary residence permit based on their enrollment, applied for through the university at least 30 days before their permitted stay ends. Register your place of stay promptly. Full steps are in Azerbaijan Student Visa 2026: Step-by-Step Guide.

Housing

AMU

AMU’s official dormitory page lists four dormitory buildings, with No. 5 allocated to international students (Nos. 1 and 6 for male students and No. 2 for female students). The page lists current occupancy figures for each building, and it is an older page, so treat the numbers as indicative. AMU’s FAQ states that after signing the contract students apply for a dormitory place, that places are limited, and that the annual fee is AZN 1,000 (about USD 600).

What to do: apply for a dormitory place as soon as your contract is signed, ask in writing whether a place is guaranteed for your intake, and have a private rental plan in case it is not.

NSU

We could not confirm Nakhchivan State University’s dormitory fee or availability from an official source. Ask the university in writing before you commit.

Will My Medical Degree Be Recognized at Home?

This is the question that matters most, and no university can answer it for you.

What we can say:

  • AMU is a state medical university with national accreditation, and our AMU profile covers its IAAR accreditation and WFME recognition. NSU is listed by recognition bodies as set out in our NSU profile. Always verify a school’s listing yourself in the World Directory of Medical Schools and with your national medical council.
  • For Egypt, there is no pre-published list of recognized Azerbaijani universities. The Supreme Council of Universities evaluates equivalency case by case after graduation, and the Egyptian Medical Syndicate applies additional requirements for medical degrees, including aspects such as the teaching hospital, recognition of practice in the country of study, and the student’s high school track (science stream).
  • In many countries, foreign medical graduates must also pass a national licensing or qualifying exam. Check yours.

What you should do before enrolling:

  1. Write to your home country’s ministry of health or higher education and medical council. Ask for their current requirements for foreign medical degrees, in writing.
  2. Check that the university and program appear in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  3. Check any requirement about the secondary-school track, teaching hospital, or years of study.
  4. Keep all transcripts, syllabi, clinical rotation logs, and attendance records.

Our article Recognition of Azerbaijani University Degrees in Egypt explains this mechanism in detail.

Clinical Training and Facilities

AMU’s official site lists teaching clinics including a Teaching Therapeutic Clinic, a Teaching Surgery Clinic, a Dental Clinic, and an Oncology Clinic. Students also have access to a library, research laboratories, a data-analytics and artificial intelligence laboratory, and a student scientific society. As with any medical school, ask which hospitals are used for each year’s rotations and what the patient exposure looks like for international students.

Who Should Choose Medicine in Azerbaijan?

A good fit if:

  • You want a dedicated medical university with an English track
  • Your budget suits roughly USD 41,000 (AMU tuition and preparatory course) or less at NSU
  • You have confirmed your home country’s rules on recognition
  • You are comfortable adapting to Azerbaijani or Russian in clinical settings

Think twice if:

  • Your home country requires a specific recognition list that Azerbaijan does not appear on
  • You need guaranteed housing and cannot afford private rent
  • You want to study Medicine at Khazar, BSU, ADA, or ASOIU, which do not offer it to international students

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Trusting old fees. Use the university’s current written fee, not a website’s old table.
  2. Choosing the wrong track. You cannot switch faculty or language after the interview.
  3. Skipping the recognition check. Do it before paying, not after graduating.
  4. Paying through unofficial channels. Pay only as instructed in writing by the university.
  5. Assuming housing. Dormitory places are limited.
  6. Mixing up universities. Nakhchivan State University and Nakhchivan University are different institutions.
