Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) is a leading internationally accredited maritime higher education institution located in Batumi, Georgia.
Our primary mission is to train highly qualified professionals for careers in the global maritime shipping industry and marine transportation infrastructure.

History of the Batumi State Maritime Academy
The Batumi Technical Maritime University was originally established in 1929. On March 5, 1944, the Soviet Defense Committee founded the Batumi Marine Institute. The Institute played a significant role in the development of maritime activities throughout the Soviet Union as a whole. It trained up to 5,000 highly qualified maritime specialists, whose graduates continue to work aboard ocean-going vessels around the world.
Following Georgia’s independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Georgian government re-established the academy in 1992. Shortly after national education system reforms in 2004, BSMA was granted university status on April 25, 2005, becoming an official higher education institution under Georgian law.
Anatoli Kasharava was among the most notable figures associated with the academy. He studied at the institution and later began teaching there as a full-time lecturer shortly after World War II. Upon his death in 1982, he was honored with burial on the academy’s grounds.
Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) offers students the opportunity to receive education across a wide range of maritime industry fields. Graduates of BSMA are well-prepared to take on leadership roles in crews of commercial seagoing vessels, maritime crewing companies, and other public or private organizations whose activities are related to the operation, control, and management of maritime transportation.
The academy actively supports the development of various maritime institutions located along Georgia’s Black Sea coast. The proximity of Batumi, Poti, Kulevi ports, and the Supsa terminal creates favorable conditions for students to undergo comprehensive practical training at these port facilities. At the same time, the academy provides these industries with qualified professional personnel.
