Batumi State Maritime Academy

Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) is an internationally accredited higher education maritime school located in Batumi, Georgia.
The main mission of the institution is to train qualified personnel to work in the commercial maritime fleet and maritime transport infrastructure.
BSMA offers an educational process that complies with Georgian legislation as well as the international STCW Convention.

History of Batumi State Maritime Academy:

The Batumi Technical Maritime School was opened in 1929. On March 5, 1944, the Soviet Union’s Committee for Civil Defense established the Batumi Maritime Institute. The institute played a significant role in the development of maritime activities across the Soviet Union. It trained up to 5,000 highly qualified maritime professionals, many of whom continued their careers aboard ocean-going vessels around the world.

After Georgia gained independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Georgian government established the academy in 1992. Following a national education reform in 2004, BSMA was granted legal status as an educational university on April 25, 2005.

One of the academy’s most notable figures was Anatoli Kacharava. Shortly after World War II, he began teaching there as a full-time lecturer. After his death in 1982, he was honorably buried on the academy’s grounds.

BSMA offers students the opportunity to receive education across a wide range of maritime industry fields.
Graduates of Batumi State Maritime Academy have the chance to occupy leadership positions within commercial ship crews, maritime crewing companies, and other public or private services involved in maritime transport, control, and management.

The academy actively supports the development of various maritime institutions located along Georgia’s Black Sea coast.
Its proximity to the ports of Batumi, Poti, Kulevi, and the Supsa terminal provides excellent conditions for students to complete full internships at these port facilities, while also supplying them with qualified personnel.
