Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU)
Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) is a university established in July 1930 in Tbilisi, Georgia, and is now located in Kutaisi. The university was founded about eight decades ago and continues to grow day by day, aiming to qualify those who aspire to develop their communities and the world around them.
The university was founded on the basis of Tbilisi State University. Tbilisi State University was established in 1918 under the leadership of the Georgian historian Ivan Javakhishvili. In July 1930, when Georgia was already under Soviet rule, the authorities abolished Tbilisi State University and replaced it with four independent institutions. One of these was the State Pedagogical Institute.
On January 8, 1933, Tbilisi State University was re-established, and the State Pedagogical Institute moved to Kutaisi. It is now known as Kutaisi University and is located in the city center, beginning its operations on February 13, 1933. Up to 700 students moved from Tbilisi to Kutaisi to continue their studies at the university.
In 1990, the university was renamed Akaki Tsereteli State University, in honor of the Georgian poet and prominent figure of the national liberation movement, Akaki Tsereteli. On February 23, 2006, the authorities merged the university with the Kutaisi N. Muskhelishvili Polytechnic Institute, which had been founded on September 1, 1974, resulting in an expansion of the faculty and enhancement of technical study programs.
